  7.     As Jordan's King Hussein mounts a last-ditch effort for
  8. peace, he is sporting a silvery new beard. Some of the King's
  9. subjects believe he is trying to appear more pious as the gulf
  10. conflict heats up. Just after Hussein grew the beard, he
  11. appointed members of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood to
  12. his Cabinet, thereby including that group in the government for
  13. the first time. Others see the beard's purpose differently,
  14. concluding that months of fruitless diplomacy have caused the
  15. King's stress-induced skin rash to act up again.
